Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director

After a 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, Call of Duty's Multiplayer Creative Director, has departed Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Reisdorf played a pivotal role in shaping the multiplayer experience for various installments, including the recently released Modern Warfare 3 (2023), overseeing live seasonal content and modes. His journey with Sledgehammer Games, which began with the studio's inaugural title, Modern Warfare 3, encompassed a significant portion of the studio's history.

Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, collaborated extensively with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on various Call of Duty projects, culminating in the 2024 release of Black Ops 6 and ongoing support for Warzone.

In a January 13th Twitter announcement, Reisdorf confirmed his departure from Sledgehammer Games, reflecting on his key achievements. His contributions to Modern Warfare 3 extended beyond the multiplayer sphere, including work on the Scorched Earth campaign mission and the memorable "Blood Brothers" sequence.

Reisdorf's influence extended to the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, significantly impacting the gameplay mechanics of Advanced Warfare (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads, weapon signatures, and energy weapons). He also designed multiplayer maps for the game, though he expressed some reservations about the "Pick 13" system.

His involvement in Call of Duty: WW2 saw him address initial concerns regarding the game's weapon class restrictions, ultimately contributing to their revision. For Call of Duty: Vanguard, he favored the development of traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing engaging gameplay over strict military realism.

His final project at Sledgehammer Games, Modern Warfare 3 (2023), saw him revisit and enhance classic Modern Warfare 2 maps (e.g., adding Shepherd's skull to Rust). As Creative Director, he spearheaded the development of over 20 live seasonal modes, including Season 1's Snowfight and Infectious Holiday.

Looking ahead, Reisdorf hinted at continued involvement in the gaming industry, leaving behind a substantial legacy in the Call of Duty franchise.
