Konami's Silent Hill Transmission event has concluded, with the spotlight fully on Silent Hill f, the next chapter in the revered horror series that transports players to 1960s Japan.
Silent Hill f was initially announced in 2022, teased as a game set in a world that is both "beautiful and therefore terrifying." It was also confirmed that the story is being penned by Ryukishi07, the celebrated Japanese writer known for the Higurashi and Umineko visual novel series.
After a wait of nearly three years, substantial new details about Silent Hill f have finally been revealed. All the latest information is detailed below.
Silent Hill f Seeks to 'Find the Beauty in Terror,' Presenting a Hauntingly Beautiful Choice in 1960s Japan
A new trailer and a wealth of information for Silent Hill f were shared by Konami. The game's theme centers on discovering "the beauty in terror," forcing players in 1960s Japan to confront a decision that is as beautiful as it is terrifying.
The development team is keeping the nature of this pivotal decision under wraps for now. However, they did reveal a portion of the narrative, which Konami describes as follows:
"Shimizu Hinkao was an ordinary teenager living an ordinary life," the official description states. "That all changed when her town was swallowed by a mysterious fog, transforming it into a nightmare. Now, she must navigate this horrifyingly unfamiliar town, solving puzzles, battling bizarre creatures, and struggling to survive... all to prepare for an ultimate, defining choice. This is a tale of a beautiful yet terrifying decision."
This original storyline is designed to be an ideal starting point for newcomers to the series, while long-time fans can look forward to hidden Easter Eggs. Konami also shared that the game is set in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, which is modeled after the real-life location of Kanayama in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture.
In a subsequent message, creature and character designer Kera shared insights that will surely intrigue fans, hinting at the new horrors awaiting in Silent Hill f.
"I have a deep affection for the Silent Hill series, and it has greatly influenced my work," Kera said. "Silent Hill 2, in particular, with its wall messages, music, and monster designs, is always on my mind. For Silent Hill f, relocating the setting to Japan required a slightly different approach. I put a lot of thought into capturing that unique atmosphere.
"Designing the monsters was the most challenging aspect. I had to honor the legacy of previous Silent Hill titles while steering the creature design in a fresh direction that still feels authentically Silent Hill. The world may not be the familiar landscape of rust and blood stains, but I sincerely hope players will appreciate the new vision and world we've crafted."
Music will play a vital role in Silent Hill f. The development team has assembled a collaboration between veteran Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage (known for the Dynasty Warriors series) to create the soundscapes for the Fog World and Otherworld, respectively.
"I composed music for an unsettlingly beautiful world, drawing inspiration from shrine imagery and blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient textures," Inage explained. "I incorporated various compositional techniques to immerse players in the protagonist's anguish, inner turmoil, fear, and other complex emotions."
Although a specific release date was not announced, Konami confirmed that Silent Hill f is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
