Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by significant server issues and player frustration. Jorg Neumann, head of MSFS, and Asobo Studio CEO Sebastian Wloch addressed these problems in a YouTube video.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
The game's launch was met with unexpectedly high player numbers, overwhelming the game's servers and databases. Neumann stated that while they anticipated strong interest, the sheer volume of players exceeded their infrastructure's capacity.
Wloch detailed the technical issues. The initial login process involves retrieving data from a server database. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, causing the database cache to repeatedly collapse. Attempts to mitigate this by increasing queue size and speed provided only temporary relief.
Login Queues, Missing Content, and Negative Steam Reviews
The server overload resulted in extensive login queues and missing in-game content, such as aircraft. This occurred because the saturated servers failed, causing repeated restarts and incomplete data downloads. Players often encountered loading screens stuck at 97%.
The resulting negative player feedback on Steam led to a "Mostly Negative" rating for the game. The issues ranged from extended wait times to missing aircraft and assets.
Ongoing Efforts and Apology
Despite the initial setbacks, the development team is actively working to resolve the server issues. They've reported progress in stabilizing the servers and managing player logins. A formal apology was issued, acknowledging the inconvenience and expressing gratitude for player patience and feedback.
