Nvidia's DLSS 4: 8X Performance Boost with Multi-Frame Generation

Nvidia showcased DLSS 4 at CES 2025, a significant leap in AI-powered upscaling technology, exclusively for the new GeForce RTX 50 Series. This iteration introduces Multi-Frame Generation (MFG), potentially increasing performance by up to 8x.

DLSS, utilizing Tensor Cores, enhances gaming visuals by upscaling lower-resolution images to higher resolutions. DLSS 4 builds upon this foundation, using MFG to generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame. This allows for achieving high frame rates, such as 240 FPS at 4K resolution with full ray tracing enabled. Furthermore, DLSS 4 integrates transformer-based AI models for the first time in real-time graphics rendering, resulting in superior image quality with improved temporal stability and reduced artifacts.

GeForce RTX 50 Series and Multi-Frame Generation:

The performance gains from MFG stem from a combination of hardware and software advancements. New AI models accelerate frame generation by 40%, reduce VRAM usage by 30%, and optimize rendering for lower computational costs. Hardware improvements like Flip Metering and enhanced Tensor Cores ensure smooth frame pacing and high-resolution support. Games like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide already demonstrate the benefits of these improvements with faster frame rates and reduced memory usage. DLSS 4 also incorporates Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution, utilizing vision transformers to generate highly detailed and stable visuals, especially in ray-traced scenes.

Backward Compatibility and Launch Titles:

DLSS 4's enhancements are backward compatible. At launch, 75 games and applications will support MFG, and over 50 will integrate the new transformer-based AI models. Major titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 will have native support, with more to follow. Nvidia's application also includes an Override feature to enable MFG and other improvements for older DLSS integrations.
