Battlefield Studios has launched Battlefield Labs, a revolutionary platform designed to foster collaboration between players and developers in shaping the future of the Battlefield franchise. This initiative allows for direct community involvement in the development process.
Battlefield Labs: Shaping the Future of Battlefield Through Community Collaboration
Direct Player Influence on Upcoming Battlefield Games
Announced on February 3, 2025, Battlefield Studios, in partnership with Electronic Arts (EA), unveiled Battlefield Labs—a groundbreaking community collaboration program. This initiative allows players to actively participate in testing game concepts, mechanics, and features for upcoming Battlefield titles.
The announcement highlights a crucial development phase where community feedback is paramount. Players will be integral to the development process, testing new features and mechanics firsthand.
Initially, Battlefield Studios will invite select players from European and North American servers to participate in the first phase of Battlefield Labs. While a precise release date remains unannounced, interested individuals can register their interest now [link].
“This game has immense potential,” explained Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization. “To unlock that potential, especially in this pre-alpha stage, now is the time to rigorously test the experiences our teams have been developing. Battlefield Labs empowers us to do just that.”
While participation is initially limited, Battlefield Studios assures the broader community will receive regular updates throughout the testing phase. Future Battlefield titles will also incorporate this community collaboration model.
“Battlefield Studios comprises DICE, the creators of the Battlefield franchise; Ripple Effect, a studio led by franchise veterans working on a new experience; Motive, developers of Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space; and Criterion, renowned for racing franchises and their contributions to various Battlefield installments.”
Features and Mechanics Undergoing Testing in Battlefield Labs
Selected players will test specific aspects of the unfinished game, allowing for timely feedback integration. Battlefield Studios revealed the planned testing scope in a recent news article:
Testing will initially focus on core gameplay pillars, including combat and destruction. This will transition to balancing and refining weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and their integration within maps, modes, and squad play. Two established modes, Conquest and Breakthrough, will also be included, offering opportunities to explore improvements.
Conquest mode features large-scale battles centered around capturing Control Points (flags). Teams compete with a limited number of tickets, lost upon respawn or enemy flag control. Breakthrough mode divides players into attackers and defenders, with attackers aiming to capture sectors while defenders obstruct their progress. A similar ticket system is used, with attackers regaining tickets upon sector capture and earning extra tickets for eliminating remaining enemy soldiers.
Battlefield Studios also seeks player feedback to refine the class system. While confident in the game's progress, the team emphasizes the vital role of player input: “We rigorously playtest internally, but your feedback will significantly enhance our development as we strive for the perfect balance of form, function, and feel.”
