Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated from the acclaimed developer Bungie, known for Destiny and Marathon. In an exciting announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, expressed his enthusiasm for teamLFG's debut project, describing it as an "ambitious" incubation endeavor.

The name teamLFG, short for 'Looking For Group,' hints at the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is a unique team-based action game, blending elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game promises a lighthearted and comedic atmosphere.

teamLFG is driven by a mission to foster friendship, community, and belonging among players. They aim to create an environment where players feel excited to log on and see familiar faces, celebrate memorable in-game moments, and build lasting connections. The studio emphasizes the importance of player feedback, planning to involve the community through early access playtests and maintaining a nimble approach to development even after launch.

"We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," teamLFG stated.

The studio's debut project emerged amidst significant changes at Bungie, including layoffs following Sony's acquisition. After repeatedly missing financial targets with Destiny 2, Bungie laid off approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024, with 155 being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these transitions that teamLFG's incubation project was spun off.

Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and the confirmation of the roadmap for Destiny 2's future. Notably, Bungie has no plans for Destiny 3 and has canceled a Destiny spinoff called Payback. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in pushing through improvements for Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company.
