Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for an unexpected leap to the big screen, with renowned director Michael Bay and acclaimed actress Sydney Sweeney attached to the project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has enlisted Bay, known for his work on the Transformers series, to both direct and produce the upcoming OutRun movie. Sweeney, who has made a name for herself in recent years, will also serve as a producer. The screenplay is being penned by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, a key figure behind the successful Sonic movies, will produce the film. Shuji Utsumi, CEO of Sega America and Europe, will oversee the project, ensuring that the essence of the game is captured on screen. OutRun, which first hit arcades in 1986, was a groundbreaking title designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen various iterations and ports, with its most recent release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009. While the franchise has been relatively quiet in recent times, Sega has not shied away from revisiting its rich catalog, with new titles in the works for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi.
Sega has also been actively exploring adaptations of its intellectual properties. The Sonic movies have been a massive hit, and last year saw the release of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon. The appetite for video game adaptations in Hollywood is stronger than ever, with films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks at the box office.
As for the potential direction of the OutRun film, fans might speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney could be envisioning a high-octane, action-packed driving adventure reminiscent of the Fast & Furious franchise. With such a talented team behind it, the OutRun movie promises to be an exciting addition to the growing list of video game adaptations.
