Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses Development on Debut Title
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its first game project. The studio, formed in 2022, is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its vision for a next-generation narrative-driven action game.
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch, including the recent announcement of Season 1 Battle Pass skins and upcoming Fantastic Four content, highlights NetEase's commitment to its live-service portfolio.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's search for a partner capable of supporting its creative ambitions. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold risks taken to create a truly unique gaming experience. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, a subsequent post indicated the team will be assisting members in finding new opportunities in the coming weeks.
This situation mirrors a similar instance involving Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, who also established a studio (GPTRACK50 Studios) under NetEase in 2022.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, following challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the studio's innovative spirit and the team's dedication to creating a groundbreaking game remain evident. The search for a new publisher marks a significant step in the studio's journey, and the outcome will be closely watched by the gaming community.
