Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware games, has fostered significant player engagement, contributing to the unique experience of the Soulsborne genre. However, Ishizaki explained that this feature wouldn't fit the intended, more streamlined and intense gameplay of Nightreign.
While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features will return, and even be improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for instance, will allow players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades, providing a richer, more interactive experience.
FromSoftware aims for a "compressed RPG" experience in Nightreign. This vision, emphasizing consistent intensity and multiplayer focus, informed the decision to omit the messaging system and adopt a three-day game structure. The goal is to minimize downtime and maximize variety within shorter play sessions.
Nightreign's 2025 launch window was confirmed during its The Game Awards 2024 reveal trailer, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
