Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developers address "FOMO" concerns regarding community events. Following player backlash over limited-time cosmetic unlock events, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive clarified their intentions, stating they are not aiming for a full live-service model.
The controversy stemmed from community events designed to unlock cosmetic items, leading some players to accuse the game of employing fear-of-missing-out (FOMO) tactics, a common criticism of live-service games that often utilize limited-time offers to incentivize spending on virtual goods. While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, the limited-time nature of these events drew parallels to practices considered manipulative. This echoes concerns raised in a 2021 GambleAware study highlighting the psychological pressure exerted by limited-time offers in games.
In response to the negative feedback, the developers assured players that all items currently available through these events will be made accessible to everyone later. Their official statement emphasizes their commitment to avoiding a full live-service model and aims to improve the unlock process to reduce player frustration.
As a gesture of goodwill, Focus Entertainment is offering a free Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through a challenging community event) to players who link their PROS accounts to the game. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil event concluding March 3rd, requiring victory with all six classes in Operations Mode.
The upcoming 7.0 update promises new content including a weapon, Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, addressing previous concerns about content scarcity. The game's success is undeniable, having sold over 5 million copies and achieving the title of fastest-selling Warhammer video game.
