Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have ignited the internet. A purported leak, originating from a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, detailed the project via Mp1st. Microsoft declined to comment when questioned by IGN.
According to Mp1st, Virtuos utilized Unreal Engine 5 to rebuild Bethesda's beloved open-world RPG, suggesting a substantial remake rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay alterations include revisions to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, hit reactions, and the HUD.
The Blocking system, reportedly inspired by action and Soulslike games, addresses criticisms of the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons now boast improved highlighting, damage calculations have been refined, and the Stamina depletion knockdown is supposedly harder to trigger. The HUD underwent a redesign for enhanced clarity, hit reactions were added for improved feedback, and Archery received a modernization across both first and third-person perspectives.
News of an Oblivion remaster surfaced in 2023 during the FTC vs. Microsoft trial, revealing a list of unannounced Bethesda games. This July 2020 document, predating Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media, included:
Fiscal Year 2022:
- Oblivion Remaster
- Indiana Jones game
Fiscal Year 2023:
- Doom Year Zero and DLC
- Project Kestrel
- Project Platinum
Fiscal Year 2024:
- The Elder Scrolls VI
- Project Kestrel: Expansion
- Licensed IP Game
- Fallout 3 Remaster
- Ghostwire: Tokyo Sequel
- Dishonored 3
- DOOM Year Zero DLC
Many of these titles faced delays or cancellation. Doom Year Zero evolved into Doom: The Dark Ages, launching this year. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle arrived in December 2024, and The Elder Scrolls VI significantly missed its projected release window.
The Oblivion remaster, originally listed as such in Microsoft's document, may have expanded in scope to become a full remake. The truth will be revealed upon official confirmation of this widely anticipated title.
Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's embrace of multiplatform releases suggests potential releases beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, an Oblivion release on this platform remains a possibility.
Leaker NateTheHate, recently reporting on the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal date, claims the Oblivion remake launches this June. This timeframe aligns with potential Switch 2 launch window speculation.
Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct features ZeniMax-owned id Software revealing more about Doom: The Dark Ages. While Microsoft teases a new game from an undisclosed developer, it’s unlikely to be Oblivion. Windows Central's Jez Corden hints at a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP with decades of history."
