Microsoft is set to enhance the Xbox gaming experience with its AI-powered tool, Copilot, which will soon be integrated into the Xbox ecosystem. Initially, Copilot for gaming will be available to Xbox Insiders through the Xbox mobile app for testing. This AI, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will offer several functionalities upon launch. Users will be able to use Copilot to install games on their Xbox, a feature that is currently straightforward but will be enhanced by AI assistance. Additionally, Copilot can provide insights into your play history, achievements, and library, and even suggest new games to play based on your preferences. During gameplay, you'll be able to interact with Copilot directly on the Xbox app, receiving real-time answers and guidance, much like its current functionality on Windows.
One of the most significant features highlighted by Microsoft is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. Currently, you can ask Copilot for help on PC with game-related queries, such as beating a boss or solving a puzzle, and it will pull answers from various online resources via Bing. Soon, this feature will extend to the Xbox app, allowing for seamless in-game assistance. Microsoft is committed to ensuring that the information provided by Copilot is accurate and reflective of the game studios' vision, with direct references to the original sources.
Microsoft's vision for Copilot extends beyond its initial capabilities. In future updates, Copilot could serve as a walkthrough assistant, helping players understand basic game functions, remember item locations, and find new items. It might also offer real-time strategy suggestions in competitive games, helping players counter opponents' moves and providing insights into gameplay dynamics. While these are currently conceptual ideas, Microsoft is keen on deeply integrating Copilot into regular Xbox gameplay, collaborating with both first-party and third-party game studios.
During the preview phase, Xbox Insiders will have the option to opt out of using Copilot and can control how it interacts with their data. Microsoft has emphasized transparency regarding data collection and usage, ensuring players have choices about sharing their personal information. However, Microsoft has not ruled out the possibility of making Copilot mandatory in the future.
Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft is also exploring developer uses for Copilot. More details on this aspect will be shared during a session at the upcoming Game Developers Conference.
