Elden Ring Player Sues For Inaccessible Content Due to Difficulty

A gamer's lawsuit against Bandai Namco and FromSoftware alleges deceptive advertising, claiming Elden Ring hides substantial content behind excessive difficulty. This article examines the lawsuit, its likelihood of success, and the plaintiff's motivations.

Hidden Content: A "Skill Issue" or Misrepresentation?

A 4chan user, Nora Kisaragi, announced plans to sue Bandai Namco on September 25th, arguing that Elden Ring, and other FromSoftware titles, conceal a significant amount of gameplay. The plaintiff claims developers intentionally obfuscate this content through extreme difficulty.

FromSoftware games are known for their challenging yet fair gameplay. The recent Shadow of the Erdtree DLC reinforced this reputation, proving difficult even for experienced players.

Kisaragi contends that this high difficulty masks undisclosed content, accusing Bandai Namco and FromSoftware of misrepresenting the game's completeness. While some players attribute datamined content to cut material, Kisaragi insists it's deliberately hidden.

The plaintiff admits a lack of concrete evidence, relying on perceived "hints" from developers. Examples cited include Sekiro's art book hinting at Genichiro's potential in an alternative storyline, and FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki's statement about humanity's role in Bloodborne.

The core argument: "You paid for content you can't access without even knowing about it."

Many dismiss the lawsuit as absurd, noting that dataminers would have uncovered such hidden content. Games often contain remnants of cut content due to development constraints; this is industry standard and doesn't necessarily indicate intentional concealment.

Legal Viability of the Lawsuit

Massachusetts law allows anyone over 18 to sue in small claims court without an attorney. However, the judge will assess the case's validity.

The plaintiff might argue under "Consumer Protection Law," which prohibits "unfair or deceptive practices." Proving this will be extremely difficult, requiring substantial evidence of a "hidden dimension" and demonstrable consumer harm. Without proof, dismissal is highly likely.

Even if successful, damages in small claims court are limited. Despite this, Kisaragi remains determined, stating their goal is to force Bandai Namco to publicly acknowledge the alleged hidden content.
