The developers at MercurySteam, alumni of Rebel Act Studios, bring their rich experience from the cult classic Severance: Blade of Darkness. Released in 2001, this game was renowned for its groundbreaking combat system, allowing players to sever enemies' limbs, which injected a visceral sense of brutality and realism into the gameplay. This feature became a cornerstone of inspiration for MercurySteam's new project.
In crafting their latest game, the team at MercurySteam also looked to modern action-adventure titles for inspiration. Notably, they drew from the cinematic combat and richly detailed world of the God of War reboot by Santa Monica Studio. Their goal was to blend fast-paced action with RPG elements to deliver a captivating and immersive experience for players.
A standout feature in Blades of Fire is its innovative weapon crafting system. Players can forge their own blades, adjusting attributes like length, weight, durability, and balance. This customization empowers players to create weapons that align perfectly with their combat preferences, adding a personal touch to their gameplay.
The narrative of Blades of Fire centers on the warrior Aran de Lira, who finds himself pitted against a cunning queen with the power to transform metal into stone. Throughout his quest, Aran will encounter 50 distinct enemy types, each demanding a tailored combat strategy.
Blades of Fire is slated for release on May 22, 2025, and will be available on PC (via the Epic Games Store), Xbox Series, and PS5.
