Expansions and Sequels: A Real Possibility?

Avowed's release has been a success, with Microsoft and Obsidian reportedly pleased with sales figures. In a February 22, 2025 interview with Bloomberg, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expansions or a sequel.

While Obsidian hasn't publicly announced any concrete plans, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the Avowed universe. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," hinting at her interest in both expansions and a potential sequel.

Navigating the Challenges of Avowed's Development

Avowed's journey to release wasn't without its hurdles. Patel openly acknowledges the messy, evolving nature of the development process.

The project began in 2018, a time when Obsidian was preparing for a sale despite prior successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. The transition to being part of Microsoft, announced in 2020, brought its own set of challenges, including the need to cut features like multiplayer functionality. A leadership change and project reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the game's direction.

Managing a team of over 80 people presented unique difficulties, as Patel explained: "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction… you would do that with a very small team." Under Patel's leadership, the team refocused on strengthening the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, shifting from a fully open world to open zones, allowing for greater refinement of these areas.

Patel reflects on this experience, stating, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on… things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Pillars of Eternity Tactics: A New Frontier?

With the Pillars of Eternity franchise revitalized through Avowed, Obsidian is exploring the possibility of a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. During a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed this interest.

Sawyer noted, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like… there are a lot of people who like tactics games," but acknowledged the challenges of determining the appropriate scope, visual quality, and overall size of such a project. Previous reports have indicated developer interest in a Pillars of Eternity tactics game, and Avowed's success may provide the impetus to finally bring this vision to life.

Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a budget closer to that of Baldur's Gate 3 ($100 million), significantly larger than Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire's budget.
