Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, announcements often omitted mentions of rival platforms like PlayStation 5, as seen in their June 2024 showcase. However, more recent events, including the January 2025 showcase, now prominently feature PS5 logos alongside Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass, reflecting a broader multiplatform push.
This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's approach, which continues to focus primarily on their own platforms in their showcases. Even multiplatform titles featured in events like State of Play omit mention of Xbox, PC, or other consoles.
Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this change in strategy in an interview with XboxEra. He emphasized a commitment to transparency, stating that showcasing games on all available platforms—including PlayStation 5 and, eventually, Nintendo Switch 2—is crucial for reaching a wider audience. While acknowledging platform differences and limitations, Spencer prioritized the games themselves, believing this approach fosters growth by maximizing player reach.
He explained the omission of PS5 logos in the past was due to logistical challenges in acquiring all necessary assets in time for the June 2024 showcase.
This new transparency suggests future Xbox showcases will increasingly include PS5 (and potentially Nintendo Switch 2) logos alongside Xbox titles. Games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty could feature PS5 branding in the upcoming June 2025 showcase. However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
