Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game's sales have fallen considerably short of expectations, leading to a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price. This underperformance is further highlighted by reports indicating that it's being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Negative player reception, particularly concerning the combat and stealth mechanics, has contributed to the game's struggles. While initial reviews were generally positive, subsequent player feedback revealed widespread dissatisfaction with these core gameplay elements. Although Ubisoft implemented updates to address these issues, they proved insufficient to significantly boost sales.
The game's poor sales figures were acknowledged by Ubisoft in September 2024. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws recently ranked only 47th in 2024's best-selling video game charts. This contrasts sharply with the success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed sequel that benefited from positive reviews and a subsequent release on PS4 and Xbox One.
Several factors explain Jedi: Survivor's superior performance. As a sequel to the popular Fallen Order, it enjoyed considerable pre-existing hype and positive critical reception. The later console release also fueled renewed interest. Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing post-launch content releases.
Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment are banking on future DLC to revitalize Outlaws' performance. The first expansion, "Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, launched in November 2024. A second expansion, "A Pirate's Fortune," introducing Hondo Ohnaka, is slated for Spring 2025. However, whether this additional content will be enough to significantly impact sales remains to be seen.
