Marvel Snap's roster of animal companions has been notably sparse, limited to characters like Cosmo, Groose, Zabu, and Hit Monkey. However, the Brave New World season introduces a new feathered friend: Redwing, Falcon's pet.
Redwing's Mechanics in Marvel Snap
Redwing is a 3-cost, 4-power card with a unique ability: The first time it's moved, a card is added from your hand to its previous location. This ability has significant limitations: it's a one-time effect, unaffected by cards like Symbiote Spider-Man, limiting its strategic flexibility. Precise card targeting with Redwing is also challenging. Move decks often feature low-cost cards (like Iron Fist) that are undesirable targets, while Scream decks typically manipulate opponent's cards rather than their own.
Despite these limitations, inexpensive move cards like Madame Web or Cloak (accessible to lower Collection Level players) can be used to activate Redwing. This can lead to surprising victories by strategically deploying powerful cards like Galactus early or drawing a high-value card such as The Infinaut.
Effective Redwing Decks
Ares and Surtur dominated the previous season, and a new Scream-based deck incorporating Aero and Heimdall continues this strategy. Redwing can be integrated, although playing Surtur on turn 3 remains the priority. This deck, however, is expensive, requiring several Series 5 cards (Hydra Bob, Scream, Redwing, Surtur, Ares, and Cull Obsidian). Hydra Bob can be substituted with a 1-cost card like Rocket Raccoon or Iceman, but the other Series 5 cards are crucial. The strategy revolves around deploying Surtur on turn 3, followed by high-power cards to boost its power, with Scream providing an alternative win condition. Polaris, Aero, and Magneto facilitate card manipulation, while Redwing can be moved to Heimdall, buffing Surtur and drawing a high-power card.
Another potential deck incorporating Redwing uses Madame Web. The nerf to Dagger has diminished the viability of move-based decks, but Madame Web's Ongoing ability is useful in current Ongoing decks. This deck includes two Series 5 cards (Madame Web and Doom 2099). Madame Web isn't strictly necessary, and removing her necessitates removing Redwing for another Ongoing card like Mobius M. Mobius. The core strategy is to deploy Doom 2099 to distribute power across locations. Madame Web aids in positioning Doom 2099 bots and manipulating Sam Wilson's shield. Redwing can be moved into Madame Web's location, drawing a card the following turn. This is, however, the only reliable method of activating Redwing in this deck. On turn 6, Doctor Doom or Spectrum are played to further distribute or concentrate power.
Is Redwing Worth the Investment?
Currently, Redwing is considered underpowered and fits within a weak archetype. Saving resources for future cards is advisable, as significant buffs would be needed to justify investing Spotlight Cache Keys or Collector's Tokens in Redwing.
