Why New Nintendo Filings Are Getting GameCube Fans Excited for Switch 2

Recent Nintendo filings have ignited excitement among fans, hinting at a potential new GameCube controller for playing classic GameCube titles on the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service—possibly even on the upcoming Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing by Nintendo lists a "game controller," aligning with the Switch 2's specifications, and suggesting a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Further investigation by Famiboards revealed that an image within the filing shows a label placement matching the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

Although this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation points towards its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online service, which already utilizes wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This naturally leads to anticipation of a GameCube game library joining the service. Nintendo fans have long championed the addition of GameCube classics to the Switch, but Nintendo has so far focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy titles. Could the Switch 2 finally bring a significant GameCube resurgence?

The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer confirming backwards compatibility and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. Many details, including its game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed, although the Joy-Con mouse theory gained some traction.

A Nintendo patent from last month suggested the Switch 2's Joy-Cons could attach upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch's rail-based Joy-Con attachment, the new controllers appear to use magnets, enabling attachment on either side. This potential design change could lead to interesting gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict a $400 price point for the Switch 2, with some suggesting a possible $500 price tag. June has been mentioned as a potential release month.

While much about the Switch 2 remains unknown, Nintendo plans a Direct presentation for April 2nd to reveal more details. In the meantime, *Metroid Prime Remastered* offers a fantastic taste of GameCube gaming on the current Nintendo Switch.
