Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment are teaming up to bring the world of Magic: The Gathering to the big and small screens. This ambitious project will encompass both films and television series, with the movie slated for initial focus.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary, known for its work on films like Dune, the Godzilla franchise, and Detective Pikachu, will spearhead the creation of a shared Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe. A Legendary executive stated, "We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering."
The report leaves some ambiguity regarding the relationship between this new initiative and the previously announced Netflix animated Magic: The Gathering series. It's possible these projects are independent, or that the animated series is now incorporated into the larger, unified universe.
Magic: The Gathering, a globally renowned trading card game launched by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, has a massive fanbase. Its parent company, Wizards of the Coast, became a Hasbro subsidiary in 1999.
This venture marks another step in Hasbro's long history of adapting its properties into film and television. The company has a proven track record with franchises like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons & Dragons, and currently has multiple projects in development, including new G.I. Joe films, a Power Rangers movie, and even a Beyblade film.
