Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has signaled its intent to expand its foray into film and television adaptations. This interest was revealed by co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in a recent Variety interview, following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement after 30 years at the helm.
"Reflecting on the Ratchet & Clank movie from years past, and our early involvement, it's clear we're keen on this avenue," Schneider stated, highlighting the studio's particular fondness for the popular franchise. While the 2016 film received mixed critical reception, Insomniac's confidence in future adaptations is bolstered by Sony's successful track record in this arena, notably the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series.
Sony's Expanding Game Adaptations Portfolio
Insomniac's ambition aligns perfectly with Sony's established success in game adaptations. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further solidifying this commitment, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled a robust pipeline of projects:
- The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025)
- Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025)
- Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027)
- Helldivers feature film (release date TBA)
- Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film (release date TBA)
Insomniac's Leadership Transition
Ted Price's retirement marks the end of an era for Insomniac Games, the studio behind iconic franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Price explained his decision, made last year, as a natural progression after three decades at the helm.
The reins are now passed to three long-time Insomniac veterans: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed his confidence in this new leadership team, emphasizing their deep understanding of Insomniac's culture and processes.
