In the world of RPGs, leveling up is crucial, and Persona 5 Royal is no exception. Failing to level up your team can lead to struggles against formidable late-game bosses, forcing you to spend extra time grinding in Mementos. Persona 5 Royal, an enhanced version of Persona 5, boasts numerous quality-of-life improvements and an additional 20 hours of gameplay, making it essential to keep your team's levels high to tackle the new content effectively.

The game introduces a new semester for the Phantom Thieves and modifies some existing boss fights. With all these additions, maintaining high levels for your team and understanding the most efficient ways to gain experience are key.

Updated on January 13, 2025, by Renri Seong: Being over-leveled can make Persona 5 Royal too easy, but matching the levels of Palace Rulers, especially on a new file, is crucial. There are several strategies to ease experience farming in P5R, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose's services in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for non-active Personas with a passive skill. This guide has been updated to include a new section on using the Insta-kill ability to farm experience quickly.

Accessories and The Moon Arcana

Mishima Yuuki's Confidant

In Persona 5 Royal, you can enhance your team's experience gain by downloading the free DLC from the PlayStation Store, which includes the Team Glasses accessory. These glasses boost your EXP gain by 15% when equipped on each character. However, remember that only Joker and three other Phantom Thieves can participate in battle, meaning those on the backline receive less experience.

To ensure that your backup team members also benefit from increased EXP, you'll need to progress in the Moon Confidant (Yuuki Mishima) to at least Rank 3 and Rank 5. Reaching Rank 10 with Mishima's Confidant allows backup members to gain the same amount of EXP as those on the front lines.

Advancing Mishima's Confidant is straightforward; just choose dialogue options that appeal to him and bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him. In Persona 5 Royal, Mishima's Mementos Missions are now linked to his Confidant progression, so completing these missions is vital for ranking up.

Mementos: Increase EXP Gain

Cognition of Mementos

Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a new character who, while not central to the plot, significantly aids gameplay. In Mementos, you'll find "flowers" and "Stamp Stations" that can be exchanged with Jose for various rewards, including changes to Mementos' Cognition. Within Jose's Shop's Cognition menu, you can choose to increase EXP, Money Rewards, or Item Rewards, but these boosts are exclusive to Mementos.

Enhancing your EXP gain to 110% requires 5 Stamps, while achieving the maximum 200% EXP increase costs 12 Stamps. There are a total of 165 Stamps in the game, but you'll need 85 to max out the EXP Up. Stamp Stations are hidden in "dead ends" behind breakable walls on Mementos floors, and you may encounter Jose when moving to a new floor.

Fight the Reaper

What Level is the Reaper?

The Reaper, a formidable foe in the Persona series, appears in Mementos when players linger too long on a floor. Signs of his approach include a red blinking screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba.

Early in the game, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible without a New Game+ file. He wields powerful -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks. At level 85, the Reaper boasts extremely high stats, with his lowest being Agility at 75, still enough to outpace the Phantom Thieves unless they are sufficiently leveled.

Successfully defeating the Reaper grants a substantial amount of experience and money, often resulting in a level-up for all characters. It's advisable to tackle the Reaper when your team reaches at least level 60. Employ Defense-raising Support skills and use Makarakarn to reflect his magic. Alternatively, if you've purchased the Persona DLC featuring Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro), you can stack Concentrate, Heat Riser, and unleash Myriad Truths for triple Almighty damage.

Defeat Treasure Demons

How to Summon Treasure Demons

Treasure Demons, unique Shadows, first appear in Madarame's Palace and later in the Metaverse. Unlike typical Shadows, these are harmless and will flee after a few turns. Each type of Treasure Demon has different Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, though all are susceptible to regular damage from Almighty attacks.

To defeat them before they escape, use Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to down them and follow up with an All-Out Attack. Another method is using a high-crit attack like Morgana's Miracle Punch, provided the Treasure Demon isn't immune to Physical attacks.

Treasure Demons appear in Palaces when security is high. You can increase encounters by crafting the Treasure Trap infiltration tool, which requires:

  • 2x Silk Yarn
  • 3x Plant Balm
  • 1x Cork Bark

Use Persona with EXP Skills

How to Get Growth Passive Skill

Typically, Personas not equipped by Joker at the end of a battle won't earn EXP. However, the Passive Skill Growth allows inactive Personas to gain a percentage of the battle's experience. There are three levels of Growth Skills:

  • Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 3: Persona will gain full EXP when inactive.

The following Personas learn Growth upon leveling:

  • Growth 1: Saki Mitama (level 7), Koppa Tengu (level 12)
  • Growth 2: Lachesis (Innate), Kurama Tengu (level 36), Thoth (level 42), Ananta (level 47)
  • Growth 3: Izanagi (level 25), Izanagi Picaro (level 28), Narcissus (level 50), Raphael (level 81)

With the Electric Chair unlocked in the Velvet Room, you can turn Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be transformed into a Growth 3 Skill Card. Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable in P5R.

To obtain the Growth 2 Skill Card, you must take Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower). Spend evenings with them near the Velvet Room Door outside Mementos.

Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant

How to Unlock Insta-Kill

Insta-kill is a powerful skill that allows Joker to instantly defeat a Shadow by ambushing it. If Joker's level is 10 levels higher than the Shadow, it will be instantly killed. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill not only defeats the Shadow but also rewards items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona.

You can identify Shadows vulnerable to Insta-kill using Joker's Third Eye ability; those with a green outline are susceptible.

To unlock Insta-kill, you need to reach Rank 7 with Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant. Ryuji's Confidant has no Social Stat requirements, making it one of the easiest to max out. To unlock Insta-kill quickly, spend time with Ryuji and select the best dialogue options to maximize points, ideally before focusing on other Confidants.
