On January 19, TikTok, a popular social media platform, temporarily ceased operations in the United States, causing unexpected disruptions for related projects, including the well-known card game Marvel Snap. Developed by Second Dinner Studios and released by Nuverse, a division of ByteDance, which also owns TikTok, Marvel Snap was offline for 24 hours due to this blockage. While the game has since returned online, full access has yet to be restored, and in-game purchases remain unavailable.
In response to this incident, Second Dinner Studios is considering switching publishers and moving some services to internal resources to prevent future disruptions. This decision was influenced by political risks, as TikTok was only granted a short 90-day extension to sell 50% of its business to a local owner. Failure to meet this agreement could result in further blocking of TikTok and its associated projects, including Marvel Snap.
Second Dinner Studios has promised to provide more information as it becomes available. Despite the outage, PC players could still access the game on Steam. The developers at Second Dinner were caught off guard by the incident and are actively working to restore full functionality. According to an official statement on Platform X, "Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress."
One of the most frustrating aspects of this situation was the lack of prior warning to players. Many continued to spend money on in-game purchases, unaware of the impending lockout. This has led to widespread complaints, particularly regarding authorization issues.
