Currently, it ranks as the 2nd top-selling game on Steam, just behind Counter-Strike 2, and the 5th most-played game, trailing CS2, Dota 2, Marvel Rivals, and Banana. With 1 million copies sold at launch, the game is on track to reach 2 million units sold soon.
The Secret Behind KCD2’s Immersive Experience
The success of KCD2's opening weekend can be attributed to Warhorse Studios' meticulous attention to detail, enhancing player immersion and enjoyment. Building on the series' reputation for realism, KCD2 introduces new elements that transport players to a 15th-century medieval setting. Features like food spoilage, the need to clean clothes and armor, and the necessity of sharpening swords to maintain their effectiveness have been further refined.
KCD2 Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner shared insights with GamesRadar on a novel stealth mechanic. He explained that as players accumulate dirt and grime, they can acquire a debuff that affects their stealth capabilities. "If you get the debuff, you know, your body odour, you smell. There's like a circle around you," Bittner said, adding, "Basically, you're broadcasting, like, I'm here."
The game also introduces "handgonnes," early firearms that reflect the era's technology. Bittner discussed with PC Gamer how these weapons, though challenging to use and inaccurate, add a unique flavor to the gameplay. "So we knew it was going to be a meme weapon, but we were cool with it," he admitted.
KCD2 PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling emphasized their focus on authenticity over hyperaccuracy. "We want to have an intriguing and cool and fun and nice videogame. However, we try extremely hard to make it as authentic as possible. We double-check the stuff, so that when the player plays it, or whenever someone checks it, that the things that are listed in there are at least plausible," he stated.
Looking Ahead: KCD2’s Post-Launch Roadmap
Warhorse Studios has outlined an exciting post-launch roadmap to keep players engaged throughout 2025. KCD2 will offer free updates alongside paid DLC content.
The free updates, slated for Spring 2025, include the Barber feature, Hardcore mode, and Horse Racing. Paid DLCs will follow in Summer with "Brushes with Death," Autumn with "Legacy of the Forge," and Winter with "Mysteria Ecclesiae."
With its impressive launch and an ambitious roadmap, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is poised to continue its success, potentially breaking more records along the way.
