Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants

Monster Hunter Wilds New Monster, Nu Udra of the Oilwell Basin, Revealed by Director

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka shed light on the game's newest locale and its formidable inhabitants. Prepare to delve into the depths of the Oilwell Basin and confront its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra.

Exploring the Oilwell Basin

Unlike the series' typically expansive horizontal environments, the Oilwell Basin boasts a unique vertical structure. Fujioka explains, "We had two horizontally broad locales already, so we opted for a vertically connected design. The deeper you go, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes." The upper levels feature oil-slick swamps, transitioning to a volcanic, almost underwater ecosystem at greater depths. This design draws inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. Tokuda adds that the Basin's appearance transforms during the "Plenty" event, shifting from a smoky, volcanic landscape to a clearer, marine-like environment. A closer look reveals creatures reminiscent of deep-sea life.

This unique ecosystem supports a diverse range of creatures, defying its initially desolate appearance.

Nu Udra: The Black Flame

The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, the Nu Udra, is a fearsome, octopus-like creature with a flammable, slimy body. Its numerous tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Fujioka reveals the design inspiration: "I've always wanted to include a tentacled monster," he says, explaining the decision to adapt an aquatic creature for a more striking, demonic appearance. The design, including horn-like head elements, complements its unique battle theme, inspired by black magic and demonic imagery. Tokuda notes, "The composers incorporated musical elements reminiscent of black magic, creating a truly unique and impactful piece."

Engaging the Nu Udra presents a significant challenge. Its numerous tentacles allow for both focused and area-of-effect attacks in rapid succession. Flash Bombs prove ineffective, as the Nu Udra relies on its tentacles, not sight, to navigate its environment.

Other Basin Dwellers

The Oilwell Basin is not solely the domain of the Nu Udra. The Ajarakan, a massive, fiery monkey-like creature, utilizes martial arts-inspired attacks. Its blend of brute strength and fire power adds another layer of danger.

The Rompopolo, a bizarre, globular monster with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gases in combat. Its menacing appearance, inspired by mad scientist tropes, belies the surprisingly "cute" equipment crafted from its materials.

A familiar face also returns: Gravio, from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a comeback, fitting seamlessly into the volcanic environment. Tokuda explains, "Considering the environment, game progression, and avoiding overlap with other monsters, we felt Gravios would offer a fresh challenge."
