Atari's subsidiary, Infogrames, has acquired the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild Inc., marking a significant step in Infogrames' revival. Infogrames, relaunched by Atari, serves as a label for games outside Atari's core portfolio, leveraging its legacy in '80s and '90s game development and distribution. The acquisition aims to expand the franchise's reach through enhanced digital and physical distribution, as well as the development of new installments and collections.
Infogrames' history includes titles like Alone in the Dark, the Backyard Baseball and Putt-Putt series, and Sonic Advance games. Following a rebranding under Atari in 2003 and subsequent bankruptcy, Infogrames, along with other Atari entities, reformed into the current Atari company. This acquisition builds on Atari's recent growth strategy, which includes the April 2024 acquisition of Totally Reliable Delivery Service.
Geoffroy Châteauvieux, Infogrames Manager, highlighted Surgeon Simulator's enduring popularity and unique appeal as key factors driving the acquisition. He expressed excitement about integrating the franchise into the Infogrames portfolio.
Atari Acquires Surgeon Simulator Franchise
The Surgeon Simulator series, created by Bossa Studios, centers around Nigel Burke, a surgeon performing operations on a patient nicknamed "Bob." The game's darkly humorous and unconventional gameplay quickly gained popularity. Initially released on PC and Mac in 2013, it expanded to iOS, Android, and PS4 in 2014, with VR and Nintendo Switch versions following. Surgeon Simulator 2 launched on PC and Xbox in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The future of the franchise remains uncertain following Bossa Studios' 2023 staff reductions and the 2022 acquisition of several of their IPs by tinyBuild.
