Assassin’s Creed Shadows Reaches 3 Million Players, Ubisoft Silent on Sales

Authore: EleanorUpdate:May 12,2025

Ubisoft has announced that *Assassin's Creed Shadows* has attracted over 3 million players since its launch on May 20. This milestone was achieved just seven days after the game's release, marking a significant increase from the 2 million players reported on the second day. Shadows has surpassed the launch numbers of both *Assassin's Creed Origins* and *Odyssey*, highlighting its strong performance in the franchise.

Ubisoft's recent statistics, previously shared in an internal email and covered by IGN, contextualize Shadows' opening weekend performance. The company noted that the game's launch is better compared to *Origins* and *Odyssey* rather than the exceptional launch of *Assassin's Creed Valhalla* in 2020, which benefited from unique circumstances.

*Assassin's Creed Shadows* achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the franchise's history, only behind *Valhalla*. It also recorded the highest day one sales ever for Ubisoft on the PlayStation Store and has seen over 40 million hours played so far.

The success of *Assassin's Creed Shadows* is crucial for Ubisoft, especially following a series of delays and the commercial disappointment of *Star Wars Outlaws* last year. Ubisoft has faced significant challenges, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The pressure is immense, with the game's performance being closely monitored globally.

Amidst these challenges, Ubisoft's founding Guillemot family reportedly considered talks with Chinese mega-corp Tencent and other investors about a buyout deal to retain control of the company's intellectual property. The gaming industry is keenly observing *Assassin's Creed Shadows'* early performance as an indicator of Ubisoft's future trajectory.

On Steam, *Assassin's Creed Shadows* set a record for the franchise by becoming the most-played Assassin's Creed game ever over the weekend, with a peak of 64,825 concurrent players. This achievement is notable as it was the first game in the series to launch day-one on Steam since *Odyssey* in 2018. For comparison, BioWare's single-player RPG *Dragon Age: The Veilguard* reached a peak of 89,418 players on the platform.
