God of War TV Series: A Fresh Start
The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War adaptation. Despite reportedly completing multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative direction.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producer Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director), along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to reshape the series' vision. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
Despite Setbacks, the Future Remains Bright
Initially announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, following the success of the 2018 God of War reboot, this adaptation is a key part of Sony's strategy to expand its critically acclaimed video game franchises into film and television. This initiative, launched with the creation of PlayStation Productions in 2019, has already yielded several successful projects.
This includes the Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, the 2022 Uncharted film, the highly successful The Last of Us series (with a second season slated for 2025), the 2023 Gran Turismo film, and this year's Twisted Metal series. Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025.
