Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025
Several older mobile devices will soon lose compatibility with Pokemon GO due to upcoming updates in March and June 2025. These updates will end support for 32-bit Android devices, impacting a significant number of players still using older phone models.
This change, announced on January 9th by Niantic, aims to optimize the game's performance on more current devices. While Pokemon GO remains popular— boasting over 110 million active players in December 2024— players using affected devices will be unable to access their accounts until they upgrade to a compatible 64-bit Android or iOS device.
Affected Devices (Partial List):
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
- Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
- Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
- LG Fortune, Tribute
- OnePlus One
- HTC One (M8)
- ZTE Overture 3
- Various Android devices released before 2015
Niantic advises affected players to securely save their login credentials. While they can regain access after upgrading their phones, they will temporarily lose access to their accounts and any purchased Pokecoins.
Despite this disruption, 2025 promises exciting developments for the Pokemon franchise. Highly anticipated releases like Pokemon Legends: Z-A are on the horizon, alongside rumored projects such as Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new Let's Go title. A rumored Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th may shed further light on future Pokemon GO plans.
