Get ready for another round of fatalities! The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot is on the horizon, and we've just gotten our first glimpse at a key addition to the cast: Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon unveiled a poster showcasing Urban as the iconic Hollywood actor and Mortal Kombat fighter. The poster cleverly mimics a fictional Johnny Cage movie, complete with the over-the-top action one would expect – including, naturally, motorcycles leaping from flames.
Mortal Kombat 2 builds directly upon the 2021 film, featuring the return of Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. Joining them are several newcomers: Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Urban's portrayal of Johnny Cage is sure to be a highlight.
The first film focused on Cole Young's journey into the Mortal Kombat universe and the long-standing conflict between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video game series provides ample source material for the filmmakers.
The original Mortal Kombat film debuted on HBO Max due to pandemic-related theater closures. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is slated for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025.
Our review of the first film awarded it a 7 out of 10, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles."
