Minecraft Creator Hints at Minecraft 2: A Spiritual Successor?

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "Minecraft 2" is in the works. While not a direct sequel due to the sale of the IP to Microsoft in 2014, Notch hinted at developing a spiritual successor.

In a recent X (formerly Twitter) poll, Notch presented fans with a choice between his current project—a blend of roguelike and first-person dungeon crawler—and a new game inspired by Minecraft. The Minecraft-inspired option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of the votes.

Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially "announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the immense popularity of the original and expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project. However, he emphasized his commitment to avoiding any infringement on Mojang Studios' and Microsoft's work on the existing Minecraft franchise.

He also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging the inherent risks involved. Despite these reservations, the positive fan response and potential financial rewards have seemingly swayed him towards this direction.

While fans eagerly await Notch's potential new creation, they can look forward to other Minecraft-related ventures in the meantime. These include Minecraft-themed amusement parks planned for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action movie, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
