Tidepool Games has just unleashed a thrilling new game on Android that's sure to captivate fans of fast-paced, pixel art roguelikes. Dubbed MageTrain, this game is a delightful nod to the classic Nimble Quest, drawing heavy inspiration from its mechanics and style.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain is a unique blend of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes. In this game, you control a line of heroes that snake behind you, much like the classic Snake game. Each hero autonomously attacks as you navigate through the arena, adding an exciting layer of strategy to your movements.
Your primary task is to manage the positioning of your heroes within the line. The placement of each hero is crucial, as their abilities change depending on their position in the train. Whether leading the charge or backing up the team, strategic placement can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine distinct heroes, each with unique skills that vary based on their role in the line. One hero even throws birds, adding a quirky twist to the gameplay. As you progress, you'll navigate through eight varied dungeons, face off against 28 different enemy types, and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team's capabilities. Along the way, you'll collect gold and power-ups to bolster your journey.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll encounter branching paths, choose upgrades, and strive to survive as long as possible. Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, there are no fixed levels and no option to save your progress. Each run is a fresh challenge, where a single mistake can lead to starting over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The beauty of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even if you don't succeed. Over time, you'll learn when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to focus on survival for just a few more seconds.
MageTrain is now available to download for free on the Google Play Store for Android users. Dive into this exciting new game and see how far you can take your hero train.
