Nicolas Cage decries the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He made this statement during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor in Dream Scenario, as reported by Variety.
Cage emphasized his belief in the irreplaceable role of human emotion and experience in artistic expression. He argued that AI, incapable of reflecting the human condition, poses a significant threat to the integrity and authenticity of acting. He warned that allowing AI manipulation, even minimally, could lead to a complete erosion of artistic purity, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic merit.
"The job of all art," Cage stated, "is to hold a mirror to the human condition...A robot can’t do that. If we let robots do that, it will lack all heart and eventually lose edge and turn to mush."
The film industry itself is also grappling with the implications of AI. While some, like Tim Burton, express deep reservations, others, such as Zack Snyder, advocate for embracing the technology. This divergence of opinion highlights the ongoing debate surrounding AI's role in the creative arts.
