Console Players Join Skate Playtest Expansion

Skateboarding Returns: Console Playtests for the Highly Anticipated "skate." Begin

Good news for console gamers! The long-awaited "skate." title, a new installment in the popular Skate franchise, is now available for playtesting on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While PC players have been enjoying playtests since mid-2022, this marks the first opportunity for Xbox and PlayStation users to experience a new Skate game in over 15 years.

The last mainline entry, Skate 3, launched in 2010. Despite a dedicated fanbase, EA seemingly shelved the franchise for a considerable period. However, persistent fan support, notably the #Skate4 hashtag, ultimately led to the creation of a dedicated development team and the announcement of a new game. Last fall, "skate." was slated for early access in 2025; these console playtests represent a significant step towards that release.

Via the official "skate." Twitter account, Xbox and PlayStation players can now participate in the playtest through the "skate." Insider program (registration required). A short video featuring developers offered some teasers. While specific gameplay details, such as the improved replay editor, remained unconfirmed, the developers did mention expanded Black hairstyle options and playfully addressed the "Fall 2024" playtest announcement.

EA has confirmed "skate." as a free-to-play, live-service game. Details remain scarce, but we know the skateboarding sim is set in the fictional city of San Vansterdam, a work-in-progress inspired by San Vanelona, Port Carverton, and real-world locations. A map leak surfaced in 2023, but its accuracy relative to the current build is uncertain. Fans can register for the playtest or patiently await the wider release.

Other Skate Games to Enjoy in the Interim

While early access is targeted for 2025, delays are always a possibility. Fortunately, several other skateboarding games offer enjoyable alternatives while awaiting the arrival of "skate."
