A Gacha-Free Atelier Experience

Koei Tecmo Europe announced on November 26, 2024 (via Twitter/X) that Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian will not include a gacha system, a significant departure from its mobile counterpart, Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator. This means players won't be forced into grinding or in-app purchases to progress.

The announcement also highlighted offline playability, eliminating the need to interact with the mobile game. The game's website promises "New protagonists and an original story await in Lantarna," suggesting a shared world but independent narrative and characters. The game will launch on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Steam in 2025. Pricing and a precise release date are yet to be revealed.

The Mobile Predecessor's Gacha System

In contrast, the mobile Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator utilizes a gacha system, requiring players to spend money to acquire and strengthen characters. While retaining core Atelier elements like synthesis and turn-based combat, its monetization proved controversial.

The gacha system employs a "spark" mechanic, awarding medals with each pull towards unlocking characters or Memoria (illustration cards). Unlike a pity system, there's no guaranteed reward after a specific number of pulls. Released in January 2024 on Steam, Android, and iOS, the mobile game received mixed reviews, with Steam users particularly criticizing the expensive gacha mechanics, despite positive mobile app store ratings.
