In the vast world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire a car in Project Zomboid.
Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, requiring only a few button presses, but there are prerequisites. While not demanding a top-tier build, specific skills are necessary.
Hotwiring Mechanics in Project Zomboid
Successfully hotwiring allows you to drive a vehicle as long as it has fuel and is in good condition, bypassing the need for keys. However, you must meet one of these requirements:
- Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills.
- Choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation. This bypasses the skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Once the requirements are met, these three steps will hotwire any working vehicle. The process is automatic; after completion, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Leveling Up Electrical and Mechanical Skills:
For those not starting as a Burglar, skill levels are increased through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses (mailboxes, sheds, bookshelves) also provide skill boosts. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP.
Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" to remove them.
