Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster's Development Time Was Longer Than Expected
Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The developers behind Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) poured 5 years into ensuring the remaster was as faithful to the originals as possible. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the team shared their journey in crafting this high-quality remaster.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays and is now scheduled for release this year. Suikoden Gensho series IP and Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that the end of development brought about a need for extensive debugging, which led to the postponement of the original release date.
Tatsuya Ogushi, the Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, elaborated, "We began by thoroughly assessing the situation. After discussions with Sakiyama about the quality benchmarks, it became evident that numerous areas required further refinement, and we committed to addressing these diligently."
Reviving the Series
The remaster isn't just a standalone project; it's the cornerstone for reviving the Suikoden franchise. Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito expressed their vision for the series, hinting at future endeavors.
Naito emphasized the importance of this initial step, stating, "This project marks our first move in reviving the Suikoden IP, and we couldn't afford any missteps. Our directive was to 'make it solid.' With Suikoden I&II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to create a robust product because if we released a subpar version at the outset, it could jeopardize the entire revival effort."

He stated, "We've been refining Suikoden I & II HDR while also dedicating ourselves to upcoming projects like the mobile game Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime." Naito added, "Once we successfully deliver these initiatives, we can begin planning our next moves."
Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of the story from Suikoden 2, marking the first project for Konami Animation.
