New Patent Confirms Features of Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con

Authore: NovaUpdate:Apr 06,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, and while it may look familiar at first glance, the real innovation seems to be centered around its Joy-Cons. Although Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details, recent reports and patents suggest significant changes, particularly in how the Joy-Cons attach and function.

According to emerging reports, the Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature magnetic attachments, allowing them to connect to the console in a new way. Even more intriguing is the possibility of using these Joy-Cons as a computer mouse. These features are now strongly supported by a series of patents filed by Nintendo, which detail the magnetic attachment system and the mouse-like functionality.

The patent describes the Joy-Con as, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." It further explains that to detach the Joy-Cons from the Switch 2, two buttons on the top surface of the controller's protrusion must be pressed. These buttons are magnetically attracted to the magnets in the console's recess, ensuring a secure fit.

The patent also includes illustrations showing how the Joy-Cons can be used as a mouse. Players can hold the controller railside down, using the shoulder buttons (R1 and R2) as left and right mouse buttons, respectively. There's also a suggestion of a scrolling function that could be activated using the joysticks.

Further illustrations demonstrate the versatility of this mouse-like function, showing it can be used in various configurations, such as a dual mouse setup or with one Joy-Con as a mouse and the other as a standard game controller.

The magnetic attachment feature for the Joy-Cons was among the earliest leaks about the Switch 2, while the mouse-like functionality surfaced later and has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released in January hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
