Netflix is officially closing down its interactive fiction games under the "Netflix Stories" banner, ending a brief experiment in narrative gaming. The move is somewhat surprising given the titles maintained a dedicated player base. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Read on for the full details.
The news, first reported by Variety, is part of a broader strategic pivot for Netflix Games. The division will now concentrate on mobile titles in genres like party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences playable on TV.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue work on other projects, including "Squid Game: Unleashed."
Netflix Stories Is Cancelled: Is the Service Shutting Down?
Despite some criticism, these games consistently ranked among the most-played titles on Netflix Games. Recent reports place the collection fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which measures total playtime rather than downloads.
Regarding the future, the final interactive title to be released will be "Love Is Blind: NYC." Once it is fully rolled out, no new Netflix Stories games will enter development. This announcement comes shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next planned game, "The Love Contract," originally scheduled for an April 8th release.
Unlike previous entries, this game was not based on an existing Netflix property. It was an original romance story about an actress entangled with a Hollywood star and a billionaire, navigating fame, scandal, and a fake-dating scheme. This project has now been canceled.
Despite the cancellation of future development, the existing library of Netflix Stories games will remain available. Titles like "Love Is Blind," "Emily in Paris," "Money Heist," "Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss," "Perfect Match," "Sex Education," "Selling Sunset," "Sweet Magnolias," "Virgin River," and "The Perfect Couple" will stay playable. However, planned sequels for series like "Outer Banks" and "Ginny & Georgia" have been axed.
That's the full story! You can still check out the available games on the Google Play Store if you enjoy Netflix-inspired content.
