For fans of the Mass Effect series who have been concerned about the direction BioWare might take with the next installment, especially in light of the stylistic choices seen in Dragon Age: Veilguard, project director Michael Gamble has provided some reassuring updates.
Mass Effect's Next Game Will Remain Photorealistic and Mature
The upcoming game, tentatively referred to as "Mass Effect 5," will continue to uphold the mature and photorealistic tone established by the Mass Effect trilogy. The original series garnered widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling and realistic visuals, elements that were crucial to its depiction of intense and cinematic narratives, as noted by former game director Casey Hudson.
With BioWare's latest Dragon Age title, Dragon Age: Veilguard, set to release on October 31, Michael Gamble took to Twitter (now X) to address fan concerns about the influence of Veilguard's visual style on Mass Effect 5. Fans had expressed worry over Veilguard's Disney or Pixar-like aesthetics, fearing a similar shift for the sci-fi RPG.
Gamble clarified that Mass Effect 5 will maintain its distinct identity. "Both are from the studio, but Mass Effect is Mass Effect. How you bring a Sci Fi RPG to life is different than other genres or IPs...and has to have different kinds of love," he stated. In a follow-up tweet, he emphasized that "Mass Effect will maintain the mature tone of the original Trilogy. This is all I'm gonna say for now."
He also addressed the comparisons to Pixar, expressing his disagreement with the notion and affirming that Mass Effect will remain photorealistic under his leadership. While specific details about Mass Effect 5 remain sparse, fans can rest assured that the game will stay true to its roots.
N7 Day 2024 Could Bring New Mass Effect 5 Trailer or Announcement
As N7 Day, celebrated annually on November 7, approaches, anticipation grows for potential announcements related to Mass Effect. Historically, BioWare has used this day to make significant reveals, such as the 2020 announcement of the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition trilogy remaster.
Last year's N7 Day saw a series of cryptic posts that teased elements of Mass Effect 5's storyline, potential character returns, and even hinted at the game's working title. These posts included a mysterious character donning a full-face helmet and suit adorned with the N7 logo.
The culmination of these teasers was a 34-second clip, but beyond these hints, little has been disclosed about Mass Effect 5. Fans are eagerly awaiting N7 Day 2024, hoping for a new trailer or a major announcement that will shed more light on the next chapter in the beloved military sci-fi saga.
