"All LEGO Chess Sets: A Comprehensive Release History"

Authore: LoganUpdate:Apr 22,2025

LEGO patented its iconic "binding brick" in 1958, but it wasn't until nearly 50 years later, in 2005, that the company released its first official chess build. As someone who spends much of my free time exploring and building with LEGO, I was surprised to learn this fact. The idea of a LEGO Chess set seemed like a natural fit—a simple and marketable way to introduce LEGO to a broader audience.

However, in 2005, LEGO's primary focus was on children, and it wasn't until 2007 that the company started catering more to adults. The concept of LEGO lifestyle branding, integrating brick-built items into everyday living spaces, didn't gain significant traction until around 2020. What we now consider commonplace in 2025 was groundbreaking when the first LEGO Chess set was introduced in 2005, and it was virtually unheard of in the preceding decades, when most builds were focused on miniature playsets rather than real-life representations.

Below is a detailed history of every LEGO Chess Set, totaling 12 sets, including the only one still available for purchase in 2025. For more options, check out our guide to the best overall chess sets.
