Kojima Productions teams up with Niantic Spatial for something brand-new

Following closely on their 10th anniversary, Kojima Productions is joining forces with Niantic Spatial.

  • A trailer echoing the studio's signature franchise, Death Stranding, debuted during a recent livestream event.
  • The footage hints that something massive and delightfully strange may be arriving shortly.

This partnership marks a significant shift for both Kojima Productions and Niantic. Founded by Konami veterans and acclaimed director Hideo Kojima, the studio is partnering with the creators of Pokémon GO and Monster Hunter Now to deliver an entirely new epic in interactive storytelling.

During the "Beyond the Strand" livestream, a teaser trailer highlighted the collaboration between Niantic Spatial—a spinoff from Niantic’s gaming division—and Kojima Productions. Coinciding with the studio's 10th anniversary, the A New Dawn teaser leaves us guessing about what this joint venture will entail.

While it might be tempting to speculate that we're getting an augmented reality version of Death Stranding, knowing Kojima, expect something even more unconventional. Fans familiar with his discussions on the concept of a "strand game" will likely spot thematic echoes in this trailer, particularly regarding how the real and digital worlds interact.

What Does It Mean?

Absolutely. That’s precisely my reaction as well. However, it mirrors the skepticism many of us felt when the first Death Stranding trailer dropped. We wondered if Kojima's boundless creativity could weave a coherent narrative, yet he largely succeeded with that Norman Reedus-led project.

Despite all the rumors swirling around this new venture, I doubt it will be directly tied to Death Stranding, even if it becomes a single cohesive title. What is certain is that it will bear strong marks of Kojima's unique artistic vision, however eccentric or bizarre those elements may prove.
