Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diverse Setting Reflects Historical Accuracy

Warhorse Studios addresses the controversy surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2)'s diverse representation. The developers emphasize their commitment to historical accuracy as the driving force behind the game's increased diversity, not any external agenda.

Focus on Game Development, Not External Criticism

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Historical Accuracy

Recent online backlash regarding KCD2's inclusivity has frustrated Warhorse Studios. In a February 3, 2025 interview with PC Gamer, PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling stated that the team is simply focused on creating an engaging video game, regardless of fluctuating public perception. He highlighted the constant shifting of criticism aimed at the studio, emphasizing their dedication to game development. Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner echoed this sentiment, suggesting that extreme viewpoints often remain unsatisfied.

Kuttenberg's Historical Context Explains Diversity

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diverse Characters

KCD2's setting in Kuttenberg, Bohemia's significant financial center, naturally lends itself to a more diverse cast. Bittner explained that the city's role as the royal mint attracted individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, including Italians and Germans, and featured a Jewish quarter. He stressed the importance of representing not just diverse characters but also their unique perspectives within the game's narrative. Stolz-Zwilling confirmed that the game's content wasn't dictated by publishers Plaion or Embracer, but rather shaped by community feedback and rigorous historical research.

Pre-Orders Remain Strong Despite Controversy

Contrary to online speculation, KCD2's pre-order sales haven't been significantly impacted by the controversy. Writer Daniel Vávra clarified on Twitter (X) that return rates remain consistent. He attributed recent lower Steam chart rankings to concurrent game sales and promotions, citing similar impacts on Monster Hunter: Wilds pre-orders. Vávra also addressed false rumors of a Saudi Arabian ban, emphasizing the game's role-playing nature and player agency in shaping their in-game experiences and consequences.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
