Authore: LucyUpdate:May 22,2025

Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling the exciting details of their upcoming Magic: The Gathering collaboration with Final Fantasy, set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, they showcased a substantial array of cards from both the main set and the specially themed Commander decks, delighting fans with nostalgic and innovative nods to their favorite Final Fantasy games.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy encompasses both a traditional Commander format and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast collection of cards to explore. The main set spans the entire mainline series, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16, while the Commander Decks focus on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14. These decks are led by the iconic Commanders Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola, respectively.

For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a mechanic that reflects his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons from Final Fantasy are portrayed as "Saga Creatures," blending the essence of both Magic and Final Fantasy mechanics to create powerful but fleeting forces on the battlefield.

Notably, cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, showcase stunning artwork by Square's Tetsuya Nomura. The card's design evolves to represent Sephiroth's transformations throughout the Final Fantasy VII universe, culminating in his ultimate form as Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

The reception has been overwhelmingly positive.

Reprints of existing Magic cards have been cleverly integrated with Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp features art inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy VII.

On a lighter note, the iconic and often-memed moment from Final Fantasy X, featuring Tidus' "Inspiring Call," also made it into the set.

Clever Concealment draws on the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy VII, featuring Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, complete with a fitting mechanic. The Secret Rendezvous card offers four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy VII, with each potential date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

The Final Fantasy XIV set, in particular, is rich with references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card, for example, captures the gentleman's quirky habit of disappearing and reappearing, resulting in a unique White/Black card.

One user on the FFXIV subreddit pointed out that the Archaeomancer's Map card references a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map in the game.

Final Fantasy XIV players have embraced the cards, with playful references like the "This is Thancred" meme and a user's creative addition of alternative flavor text to the Rite of Replication card, commemorating a memorable speech from A Realm Reborn.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander decks have received significant attention, other reveals like Commune With Beavers have piqued curiosity about how other Final Fantasy games will be adapted into the Magic set.

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set is slated for release on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend one week prior.
