Elden Ring's Tree of Erd a Seasonal Delight

Reddit user Independent-Design17 proposed a fascinating theory: Elden Ring's Erdtree draws inspiration from the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda.

Superficial similarities are undeniable, particularly when comparing the in-game's smaller Erdtrees to Nuytsia. However, the parallels run deeper. Elden Ring lore depicts the Erdtree guiding the souls of the deceased, reflected by the catacombs at its base. Intriguingly, Nuytsia holds similar spiritual significance in Australian Aboriginal culture; its blossoms represent the souls of the departed, their vibrant hues echoing the sunset, the spirits' final destination.

Further strengthening this connection is Nuytsia's semi-parasitic nature. It thrives by absorbing nutrients from surrounding plants. This resonates with fan theories suggesting the Erdtree is parasitic, having usurped the life force of an ancient Great Tree. However, game descriptions referencing a "Great Tree" are now understood to be a translation error, referring instead to the Erdtree's own extensive root system.

Whether FromSoftware intentionally incorporated these Nuytsia parallels remains a mystery, known only to the developers themselves.
