If you’re a Pokemon enthusiast and active on social media, you've likely noticed the buzz around Pokemon vending machines. As The Pokemon Company expands these machines across the US, fans are buzzing with questions—and we're here to provide the answers.
What Are Pokemon Vending Machines?
Pokemon vending machines are automated dispensers that sell a variety of Pokemon merchandise, much like grabbing a soda—only not as budget-friendly.
Over the years, various types of vending machines have emerged, but the ones currently making waves in the US are focused on the Trading Card Game (TCG). These models were first tested in Washington in 2017, and following a successful trial, more grocery store chains across the country have adopted them.
These machines are hard to miss, boasting vibrant colors and unmistakable Pokemon branding. I recently visited one at a Kroger grocery store, located right by the entrance, making it incredibly easy to spot.
The machines feature a user-friendly touch screen, a step up from the traditional button-press models. You can browse through the available TCG items, make your selections, and complete your purchase using a credit card. The process is enhanced with delightful Pokemon animations, making it a fun experience to buy a pack of cards—or several.
After your purchase, the machine prompts you to enter an email address for a digital receipt. However, it's important to note that The Pokemon Company does not accept returns on TCG merchandise bought from these machines.
What Do Pokemon Vending Machines Sell?
Primarily, Pokemon vending machines in the United States are stocked with Pokemon TCG products, including Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Packs, and other related items.
During my visit to a Pokemon TCG vending machine at Kroger, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was still well-stocked, even during the hectic Thanksgiving shopping weekend. While the latest Elite Trainer Boxes were sold out, there were plenty of Booster Packs and older Trainer Boxes available.
These machines generally do not offer plushies, t-shirts, video games, or other Pokemon merchandise. There are a few Pokemon Center vending machines in Washington State that carry a broader range of products, but these seem to be gradually replaced by the more focused TCG machines.
