CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the install size for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be a hefty 64GB. This is notably smaller than the 100-110GB required on Xbox or PlayStation 5, but on the Switch 2, it represents a significant 25% of the console's total 256GB internal storage. Set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, Cyberpunk 2077 will be available both as a physical 64GB game card and as a digital download from the Nintendo eShop.
Nintendo recently clarified that some new Switch 2 game cards will serve as keys for game downloads rather than containing the full game. However, this approach does not apply to Cyberpunk 2077, which will come with the full game on the card. This raises the question of how quickly the Switch 2's internal storage might fill up, given the trend of increasing game sizes.
The Switch 2 boasts a 256GB internal storage, a significant upgrade from the original Switch's 32GB. Yet, with games like Cyberpunk 2077 taking up 64GB and other titles, such as the anticipated $80 Mario Kart World, likely demanding even more space, storage concerns are valid. For comparison, Tears of the Kingdom, one of the largest games on the original Switch, only required 16GB.
The solution to this storage dilemma is expandable storage. While the original Switch used standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, the Switch 2 requires the newer microSD Express format. This means that existing microSD cards won't be compatible, and users will need to purchase the pricier microSD Express cards.
Our team at IGN has already identified the best deals on Switch 2-compatible microSD Express cards from brands like SanDisk and Lexar, ranging from 128GB ($44.99) to 1TB ($199.99). Some of these options are already in high demand, with certain models listed as "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon. Nintendo is also collaborating with SanDisk and Samsung to offer branded cards, which might come at a higher cost compared to similar third-party products. As the Switch 2 drives demand, more manufacturers may enter the microSD Express market, potentially affecting prices.
