Chaos at My Nintendo Store in Japan: Switch 2 Pre-Order Lottery Overwhelms Site, Scammers Emerge

April 24, 2025, marks a pivotal day for Nintendo enthusiasts in Japan, as the company is poised to announce the winners of the Switch 2 pre-order lottery via the official My Nintendo Store. The overwhelming demand led to the website undergoing maintenance due to excessive traffic. Additionally, Nintendo issued a crucial warning about phishing emails that falsely claim to notify recipients of their lottery win for the Switch 2.

The lottery for pre-ordering the Switch 2 in Japan commenced on April 2, with the promise of delivery on the console's launch date, June 5. According to a recent message from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, an astounding 2.2 million people entered the first Switch 2 presale lottery, surpassing the company's expectations and inevitably leaving many hopeful fans disappointed.

As the results of the first Switch 2 presale lottery were unveiled today, the surge of eager fans overwhelmed the My Nintendo Store, prompting Nintendo to temporarily shut down the site for maintenance. Concurrently, scammers capitalized on the frenzy by circulating deceptive lottery results.

On social media platform X, Japanese-speaking users have been vigilant, sharing screenshots of these fraudulent emails and highlighting various scams. These emails, with subject lines like "You have won the Switch 2 lottery," might deceive many into believing they've secured a console. However, these phishing emails often require users to click on suspicious LINE messenger app links or pay via dubious URLs, urging immediate action to claim their prize. The scams vary from overtly fake, emoji-filled emails to more polished attempts with minor errors like misspellings in email addresses and non-Japanese URLs.

In response, the official warning from the Japanese Nintendo Support account clarified that, despite plans to send out lottery results on April 24, no such emails have been dispatched yet. They emphasized that any emails received prior to their official notification are not from Nintendo.

In the U.S., Nintendo has updated its website to address concerns about release-day delivery for those who registered interest in purchasing a Switch 2 from the My Nintendo Store. The company cannot guarantee delivery by the June 5 launch date, and invitation emails might arrive after the console's release. However, Nintendo assures that a shipping date will be confirmed upon purchase. They also suggested that fans might have a better chance of securing a Switch 2 at launch by pre-ordering from third-party retailers, despite the console already being sold out following overnight pre-orders.

The challenges faced by fans on April 24, combined with Nintendo's warnings, indicate that the next-gen console will be in high demand and potentially difficult to obtain around its launch.

According to the FAQ on Nintendo's website, the first batch of invitations for the My Nintendo Store in the U.S. will begin on May 8, 2025. Subsequent batches will be sent out periodically until the store opens to everyone. These initial invitations will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible registrants who meet specific priority criteria. Invitees will have 72 hours from the time of the email to complete their purchase.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order invitation priority requirements:

  • You must have been the one who purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • You must have had any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for a minimum of 12 months.
  • You must have opted in to share gameplay data and have at least 50 hours total gameplay hours.
