Tichu: A Thrilling Card Game Blending Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker
Tichu is a captivating card game for four players, forming two opposing partnerships. Teams collaborate to accumulate points and achieve victory by being the first to reach a predetermined score. Played over multiple hands, Tichu combines strategic gameplay with exciting elements of chance.
The game utilizes a 56-card deck, featuring four suits (Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars), each with cards ranked 2-10, J, Q, K, and A. Four special cards—the Dragon, Phoenix, Hound, and Mah Jong—add unique strategic depth.
Each player receives eight initial cards, with the opportunity to declare "Grand Tichu" (a 200-point bet on winning by discarding all cards first) before receiving an additional six cards. Alternatively, a "Tichu" call (a 100-point bet for the individual player to go out first) can be made before playing a card. The timing and point values differentiate these bold declarations.
Following the initial deal, a crucial card exchange phase ensues. Each player secretly passes one card to every other player, resulting in a total of three cards exchanged.
The player holding the Mah Jong card initiates the gameplay. Players must play matching combinations of higher value (exceptions exist for "Bombs," which will be detailed later). A single card is beaten by a higher single card; sequences of pairs, seven-card sequences, and full houses are similarly challenged by higher-value equivalents (in full houses, the trio's value is decisive). The player successfully playing the highest combination captures the trick and leads the next. A player is "out" when they have discarded all their cards. The round concludes when two teammates are out. A single remaining player incurs a penalty, transferring their hand to their opponents' captured tricks.
The game culminates when a team surpasses the pre-determined point total.
