The long-anticipated remake of Persona 4 appears to be moving from rumor to reality, as voice actor Yuri Lowenthal confirms he will not be reprising his role as Yosuke Hanamura in the unannounced project. Lowenthal, who has voiced Yosuke in the original Persona 4 and multiple spin-offs, shared the news on BlueSky, stating, “And for those who keep asking, no, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake. I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.”
While Atlus has yet to officially confirm the remake, the implication points directly to the developer. We’ve reached out to Sega/Atlus for comment but have not received a response.
Voice actors under SAG-AFTRA remain on strike over key issues, including AI protections and fair compensation. Although Lowenthal is a union member, it remains unclear whether the strike influenced casting decisions for the remake. However, SAG-AFTRA has emphasized that negotiations with the game industry’s bargaining group remain unresolved, with a March statement noting they are still “frustratingly far apart.”
Despite the lack of official word, speculation about a Persona 4 remake has been building for months. A domain registration linked to the game earlier this year fueled expectations, and insider leaks have hinted at its development in the past. Now, with a core cast member confirming the project’s existence, momentum is growing.
Given the critical and commercial success of Persona 3 Reload, a faithful reimagining of Persona 4 feels like a natural next step. The original Persona 3 remake was announced during Xbox’s 2023 Game Showcase—making this summer’s wave of gaming events a likely candidate for the big reveal.
In related news, fans of the franchise won’t have to wait too long for new content: Persona 5: The Phantom X, a mobile and PC spin-off, is set to launch on June 26, 2025, offering a fresh dose of Persona 5 action for eager players.
